William Ritchie Whitaker papers, 1855-1886.

This collection consists of professional and personal papers of William Ritchie Whitaker, who had a long career as judge in the Orleans Parish, Louisiana, criminal court system in the nineteenth century. Included are handwritten letters with postmarked envelopes, programs, funeral notices, certificates, stamped receipts, local newspaper pages and other printed material, licenses for hunting and bearing firearms, voter registration documents, calling cards, and photographs. One of the certificates bears the autograph of President James Buchanan. Correspondents include William Eaton Chandler (1835-1917), and Benjamin F. Butler (1818-1893).

Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler. His father served under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and later became a privateer, dying of yellow fever in the West Indies not long after Benjamin was born. William R. Whitaker was reared in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, coming to New Orleans with Union troops in 1862. He was appointed in 1880 as criminal court judge in Orleans Parish.
